Q&A: Meet Omaze, the philanthropic startup behind the ‘Star Wars’ fan experience

J.J. Abrams isn’t quite done casting “Star Wars: Episode VII” yet. The cast could include you and a friend.

In a brilliant promotional move for both the highly anticipated movie and a great cause, the notoriously secretive director released a short video last month from the set in Abu Dhabi announcing Star Wars: Force for Change. Fans of the franchise analyzed the 1-minute-41-second clip for clues about the sequel: Is that a desert location for Anakin and Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine? Does the interruption by a cranky creature mean the movie’s returning to real effects rather than relying so heavily on CGI?

But the really exciting news was that the production is giving away a chance to go behind the scenes at the Pinewood Studios set in London; meet some of the cast; and transform into a “Star Wars” character to shoot a scene. Fans can donate $10 for a chance to win at Omaze.com/StarWars or give more for more chances to win plus swag including posters, T-shirts, concept art, a Chewbacca bust, a lightsaber hilt, a screenplay signed by Abrams and a private advance screening. The promotion ends just before midnight on July 18. “Read more”
